Cultural Tours : Tour 2 : 8 days

Day One: Arrival in Tunis

Reception and transfert to the hotel at Tunis. A walk to visit the Capital. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day Two: Old Medina (Old Town) – Utique- Tunis

After the breakfast, a visit to Bardo museum and to its outstanding collection of antique mosaics.

Lunch then departure for Utique which is a charming place founded by the Phoenicians of Tyre long before Carthage. We will see some houses and, far away, the palm tree that shows the location of the antique shore. The museum and its garden have beautifull maritime inspired mosaics.

Return to Tunis, dinner in downtown and overnight at the hotel.

Day three : TUNIS - DOUGGA - EL KEF – SBEITLA

Early departure to Dougga, site tour, lunch, return to Sbeitla and site tour (if possible).

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day Four : SBEITLA - KAIROUAN - EL DJEM – MAHDIA

After the breakfast, departure to Kairouan.

Kairouna is a spiritual place, we will see the big mosque of Oqba. It is also the city of traditional carpets of Tunisia. We can try delightful pastries such as EL MAKROOD (dried dates filles pasta, figs, sprinkle sesame and sprinkled honey : inescapable !) which is a jewel of Kairouan.

Departure to EL DJEM after lunch. We will walk through beautiful olive groves. The Roman amphitheatre built at the end of the 2 nd century has retained three floors, it can hold up to 35.000 spectators. The museum has mosaic treasures and the city of Africa. This city was discovered in 1990 and it was restored by the team of professor Jean Claude Golvin. organised around a central patio, different rooms shows luxurious mosaic decoration. However principal interest lay in the restoration of the walls and the roofs.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day Five : MAHDIA - MONASTIR - SOUSSE

After the breakfast, tour of the capital city of the Fatimids. Skifa El Kahla, fishing port, and the cemetry that occupies the most panoramic facade in front of the sea and behind the old town.

We hit the road to Monastir to visit the first Tunisian presedent`s hometown.

We will visit the forteress and we will have a walk between the cornice, the presedent Burguiba`s mausoleum, Trabelsia`s city and the Old Medina (old town).

Dinner and overnight at Sousse.

Day Six: SOUSSE - ZAGHOUAN - THUBURBO MAJUS - TUNIS

After breakfast, we will go to Djbel Zaghouan on the side of which we will see the Temple of Waters. This source supplied aqueduct which transported water to Carthage at the rate of 270 Litres/second.

Lunch, the temple of mercury, the thermes of winter and those of summer, the palester of Petronii are worth a pleasant tour. If time permits, we will stop at OUDHNA, site now being excavated. Amphitheater, the capitol of three levels, and the cities with the relocated mosaics are worth a good walk.

Day 7 : TUNIS - CARTHAGE – LA GOULETTE -SIDI BOU SAID

AFTER the breakfast, visit to Byrsa hill. It was established by ELLISA-Dido, ancient Carthage. The view over Tunis bay is amazing. The Punic district hangs its houses on the side of the hill. We will see the small museum which has two superb Punic sarcophagi. Then Punic Ports, the Tophet, and the Antoninus thermae. Breakfast at LA GOULETTE.

At the end of the day we will walk in the charming village of Sidi Bou Saïd: rapture of white and blue, Streets lined with orange trees, Purple shine of bougainvillea, painters, musicians, and poets` favorite residence

Goodbye dinner at Sidi bou said and overnight at Tunis

Day 8: departure

Transfert to the airport, assistance with check-in and return flight.
