The Lake of Ichkeul is a large natural lagoon that opens to six Wadis. It is one of the principal sites of wintering of the water birds of the Pale arctic Westerner. The Lake of Ichkeul is the only lake in the world with freshwater in winter and salt water in summer. Behind This particular hydrology is the development of typical plants such as bulrush and Potamogeton. The Lake constitutes a major attraction to waterfowls during their migratory journey from Europe to North Africa making Ichkeul one of the famous wintering stops in the western pond of the Mediterranean. Among the mammals in the region are the buffaloes of Ichkeul, the foxes, the genets, the otters, the bats and the golden jackals.
